October's Spooky Reads
I am back with book recs this month! I have been reading a ton lately, but to be quite honest, a lot of the books that I have read have not been books that I would necessarily recommend to anyone else to read. Not that they were terrible, they just weren’t “have you on the edge of your seat” good.
The GOOD news though, is I have three (yes, THREE) good books for October. I had it narrowed down to one, and was planning to leave it at that. However, since October brings cool weather and Halloween, I thought what better time is there to give you three scary books to make your Halloween season a little spookier? :)
The Cellar by Natasha Preston
This book was so suspenseful, I loved it! I had not read a Natasha Preston book before this one. Since reading this book, I have read two more by her. When I started The Cellar, I thought to myself - “wow, this gets started right away!”. There is very little character development, it just gets straight down to it. (In this book, the suspense starts less than 10 pages in). I can say that after reading two more of her books, they follow that same recipe and get right down to business. Like all of my friends know, I am big on psych thrillers. There really is no big twist in this book, it is a straight forward scary book about an abduction and fighting for survival. Trigger warning: this book does depict sexual assault (though not in great detail, more so, inferred. But just want you to be aware before reading. This is a real page turner that I started and finished all on a Saturday morning! Instead of solving the mystery, it is as if you are living the mystery.
2. The Stranger in the Mirror by Liv Constantine
Ugh, I could go on and on about Liv Constantine books. She writes psychological thrillers sooo well. My fave of hers is The Last Mrs. Parrish, and she has done it again with “The Stranger in the Mirror”. This is a true psychological thriller with all of the twists and turns that you would expect. Of the three recommendations this month, this one is the “least scary”. It’s not so much scary as it is suspenseful. It leaves you guessing until the very end and had some twists that I was not expecting!
3. The Lost by Natasha Preston
Are you catching on to the pattern here? Natasha Preston writes some SCARY/SUSPENSEFUL stuff, ha! The Lost is another book that gets right down to the heart of the plot. It starts, and within 20 pages you are fully immersed into the story. I started this book at night, and stayed up until 3:00 am to finish it, because my hands were sweating so badly reading it, that I couldn’t put it down and go to sleep. When the A/C kicked on in my house while reading, I definitely jumped a little bit. This gives off escape room vibes to me. Like imagine being trapped in one, with some sick people running it. Very suspenseful. After finishing the book, I thought back on the story line. To be honest, in the daylight, it didn’t seem… realistic? that it could happen in real life, but at night - whew! It had me sweating!
Have you already read any of these three? If you have or if you do, let me know in the comments what you think! Linking all books + my Kindle below. Let’s have a great week, friends :)
